Galey - Beal and Milton

Source: Zach, Karen Bazzani.  Montgomery Medicine Men .... Crawfordsville, Indiana: MCHS, 2002.

Known by their initials, B.V. and M.H., the Galey brothers were both born in a log cabin in Crawforsville at what is now the corner of Washington and Market Street.  Beal Vance (name may be Isaac Beal Vance) was born on December 14, 1833 and his brother, Milton Herndon Galey came in to the world on the 14th of September in 1837.  Their parents were William Woods Galey (born August 31, 1803 in Shelby County, Kentucky who was a prominent early tailor in Crawfordsville) and Lucy Wilhoit, who had several children other than the extremely close brothers.

Although they were technically not doctors, and were early dentists in the county, they had extensive medical training and the early dentists often gave not only advice but medicines to patients.

Both were Civil War veterans (Co. C 11th Indiana Lew Wallace's men).  They both did their medical practice under Dr. J.F. (James Fulton) Canine. although he was about their age.  Milton also spent time under Dr. McClelland.

Beal and his wife, Elizabeth Lee (daughter of one of the first judges of the county) and when they celebrated their 50th anniversary in October 1911, he was the oldest birthright Crawfordsvillian at age 78. They were the parents of three children, Mabel, Maude and Virgil, but all but Mabel Galey Snyder passed before the parents.  M.H. married Frances (Fannie) McClintock and they had one son, Scott.

Both brothers were devout Methodist and Republicans.  Although both brothers sang in a quintette that entertained at about any Crawfordsville production for many years, Milton had an exception sweet tenor voice!
